Tao of Sex
The Tao of Sex is a Theatrical performance of spoken poetry to improvisational dance and live music
Taoism believes that peace on earth begins with a healthy lifelong approach to love and sex. Without harmony
between the yin (feminine energy) and the yang (masculine energy), which are the points from which all of creation manifests, there can only be destruction. In the Tao there are the 30 ways or 30 sexual positions. Each has a different name like the Dragon Turns Over, Galloping Steed and Silkworm Spinning a Cocoon.
My vision for putting the sexual mysteries of the Tao to poetry, dance and music was to create a ceremonial theater piece which would send an ecstatic prayer
out to the planet, bringing imagination, sacredness, fun and beauty to sex, which has been put into such a small media-generated box. Also, is my hope that juice begets juice-that the audience will leave feeling orgasmic and go on to light a fire in others. My hope is that we come (no pun intended) as a culture into balance, healing ourselves one pleasure at a time.
Excerpts for Tao of Sex
Testimonial for Tao of Sex
“If there were three different categories of sex, the first category would be similar to eating collar greens at the dinner table. You don’t want to but you have to. The second category is having your daily yogurt. It tastes good and it’s good for you. The third kind of sex is the chocolate truffle, brandy-fried bananas, or for you southerners, creamy shrimp grits with prosciutto. You eat it cuz it’s Fucking Good. The performance of The Tao of Sex at UCSB was a history lesson on this third category, as the night’s 21 performances weaved from embrace to passion to licking rabbits and experimentation. Experimentation as in trois, comprennent?
I’m no Carrie Bradshaw, but I know that the Tao of Sex revolves around the idea that the Ying and Yang should be fully satisfied in every way possible. The energy level of most performances reached that level, while I have to admit that some performance left the audience wanting more . . . The auditory component of all this is an array of soft guitar, organic percussions, flutes, didgeridoos, and the soft frenzy of heavy breaths and occasional purrrrrrrrrrrs. Puurrrrrrrrrrrrr.
I was really impressed by the last performance, entitled Phoenix Plays in a Red Cave. From what I can gather, the Phoenix as a symbol of sexual decay in our society and like a Phoenix, the death of our predetermined perspectives on sex is the gateway to sexual rebirth. The poet Jamilia provides lucidity on this point and swept the audience with her literary beauty. Verdict: Caresses and Soothes your Sexual tensions.”

“Thank you so much for the evening I went with the expectation of a fun evening and got that and more. There were artists there that left an imprint that I never expected. Dancers, poets, and musicians melded their art like I had not seen at the local level before. There was a very visceral response from all of us in the audience. The evening was one that left me wanting more. I could also sense that these artists only scratched the surface of what they have to offer.”
